Upon Your Honor

4.0 out of 5 stars Transport yourself in time and place!, November 15, 2014
This review is from: Upon Your Honor (Kindle Edition)
Author Marie Lavender creates an epic novel, as her characters travel from the docks of New York City, in 1881, to New Orleans. Via carriage, ship, or horse, Chloe Waverly attempts to escape the clutches of her unwanted fiancé, Lamonte Beckett, with the help of Gabriel Hill.

Having already suffered the loss of her mother, the death of her father leaves Chloe at the mercy of society and the whim of a man who claims her father intended they marry. Unwilling to commit herself to a loveless relationship, Chloe stows aboard a merchant ship making it’s way to New Orleans. The telling of her daring escape is exciting and one of the most enjoyable parts of the book.

Halfway down the eastern seaboard, Chloe is found out by the ship captain’s son, Gabriel. A chivalrous man with kind intentions, he protects Chloe from all manner of situations. Through their joint struggles and efforts Chloe begins to believe that not all men are unkind and uncaring.

Ms. Lavender takes us on a journey from the docks of New York through the Bahamas, along coastal waters of the deep south. Beautiful visual imagery is written, allowing us to feel transported, both in time and place. We also feel the emotional angst that Chloe moves through, as she grows from frightened girl to confident woman. And well, Gabriel is to die for!

Great read. Kudos, Ms. Lavender.
