Ten Tips for Managing a Long Distance Relationship: a guest post by Emily Moore

10 Tips for Managing a Long Distance Relationship

Waiting for that special someone to get home? Be it your new bae or your old one, you’d want them to feel how much they mean to you. Even if you live far from each other, long-distance relationships (LDR) can be surprisingly easy. From keeping the flame alive through regular chats and video calls to planning romantic getaways, an LDR doesn’t have to be so isolating. In this blog, we’ll provide tips for managing a long-distance relationship – whether it’s your first or sixth. Whether yours is a short-term arrangement or something longer-term, these tricks will make distance relationship love messages easier on both of you. Let’s begin!

Stay in touch regularly

Long-distance relationship advice is to make it all about staying in touch. Communication is key, so use it wisely. There are a lot of apps that can let you stay in touch with your loved ones – Skype and Google Hangouts being two of the most popular.

You can also try to use a messaging app that suits you best, like Apple’s iMessage,, or WhatsApp. But remember that a long-distance relationship doesn’t mean that you can’t contact each other face-to-face. You can always go to your loved one’s hometown or meet them at an event. Regularly communicating with each other will help you stay connected, and notice whether things between you two change.

Plan frequent getaways

How do long-distance relationships work? Long-distance relationships are more likely to fail if you don’t get out of your comfort zone. You don’t need to do something crazy, but just getting out of your routine can do wonders! If you feel like you and your bae are missing out on each other too much, take a trip to where he/she lives or go on a short vacation.

Traveling together can be a great way to see the world and a great way to get to know each other. You can also use it as a way to spend quality time together.

When you travel together, you can also help each other work through any troubles that may be bothering them, or help each other figure out some important issues in their lives.

Do what you love together

Whether it’s taking road trips, going to museums, or just hanging out at home, one of the long-distance relationship rules is to take time to do things you love together. This will keep your relationship fresh and help you to keep the spark alive. In addition to doing things you love, try to make an effort to explore new hobbies together. This can help you to connect on a deeper level with each other. Taking an art class, going to the gym together, or learning a new skill (like cooking or origami) can help you to connect on a more personal level.

Communicate your feelings

Communication is key in any relationship, but especially in a long-distance relationship. If you find that you’re not spending enough time communicating with your beloved, you may want to consider taking a break from the video chatting aspect of your relationship. Keep in mind that it’s not only important to send distance relationship messages to each other, but also to do so nonverbally. Holding hands, smiling at each other, and putting your feet on the coffee table while you’re watching a movie or reading a book together are just a few examples of what you can do to show your feelings without using words.

Find common ground

One of the best ways to stay connected with your partner is to find common ground. This doesn’t mean that you have to be the same person that each other liked in high school. Rather, you can find common ground in topics that each of you is interested in.

For example, if you both like classical music, you could go to a concert together or find similar music podcasts to listen to. Another great way to find common ground with your partner is to do activities that you would both enjoy doing with other people, including long-distance relationships online games. This can be a fantastic way to meet new people and make new friends.

Respect your no-go zones

How many long-distance relationships work? There is no correct answer as all people are different. In a long-distance relationship, you don’t want to push your beloved outside of their comfort zone. This could make them uncomfortable, or they may not want to see you at all. Be respectful of your partner’s no-go zones. If they don’t want to video chat, don’t bug them. If they don’t want to meet you in person, don’t insist on it. With these tips, you can easily respect each other’s no-go zones without pushing too hard.

Plan your dates well in advance

Did you know that people remember dates better if they are planned beforehand?

Planning your dates well in advance gives you the opportunity to pick the perfect spot to meet up and make any last-minute adjustments. Planning your dates well in advance can also help you to save money and plan your weekend around when you have plans with your beloved.

Don’t text when you’re angry

Texting is a great way to keep in touch with your friends and family. But when you’re upset or angry, text messages are more likely to be filled with negative words than positive ones. So when you’re feeling angry, avoid sending or reading text messages. By avoiding texting when you’re angry, you can avoid sending messages that could come off as hurtful to your partner.

Be flexible with meeting times

If your partner lives far away, plan your dates so that your date doesn’t have to travel too far.

After all, distance is not always a bad thing – it can actually be a benefit to some people. If you want to see your partner but they live far away from you, you can work something out that makes it work for both of you, such as visiting them in their hometown or meeting them for a day trip.

Keep a photo diary of your date nights

A splendid way to keep track of your dates is to keep a photo diary of your date nights. You can use this journal to remember all of the fun things that happened on your dates, and you can also use this journal to help you to stay in touch with your precious when you’re apart. Keeping a photo journal can help you to remember all of the great things that happen during your dates, and it can also help you to stay in touch with your bae when you’re apart.
